Round Britain By Bike 2025
The Challenge
Hello, my name is Bernard Bunting. I am a 67-year-old husband, father, former soldier and founder of a family business – and I live with Young Onset Alzheimer’s Disease, diagnosed in 2022.
On 18 May 2025, I embarked on 4,000-mile bike ride round the coast of Britain in aid of The National Brain Appeal, a charity supporting the world’s first Rare Dementia Support Centre, which will open in early 2026 in Woburn Square, London WC1
My goal is not just to raise £50,000 but to also raise awareness of the potential of this fantastic centre to help people living with, or at risk of, inherited, atypical and young onset dementias.
My family and I have been grateful and inspired by the support given to us by the dedicated experts at Queen Square. But there is scope for the National Brain Appeal to deliver so much more – the initiatives have been developed but significant funds are needed to help deliver them. And this is where I want to do what I can to help.
Over seven weeks, starting on 18 May 2025, I cycled 4,011 miles round the coast of Britain, starting from Putney Bridge in south west London I followed the Thames out to Rochester in Kent, over the white cliffs of Dover, Land’s End, Holyhead, Dumfries, Stranraer, Oban, Mallaig, Ullapool, Kylescue, John O’ Groats, Inverness, Aberdeen, St Andrews, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Grimsby, Skegness, Cromer, Clacton, Tilbury returning to Putney Bridge along the north bank of the Thames – with a brief stop off at Queen Square and the National Centre for Neurology.
My accommodation was generously provided by friends, family and several hotels who provided B&B free of charge, I covered the cost of the rest of my accommodation and food expenses along the journey, so every penny raised will go directly to supporting the medical scientist’s the running costs of the Rare Dementia Support Centre.
If you are inspired by my achievement, please donate via my JustGiving page or use the QR code below. More importantly, please share my story far and wide, with family, friends and colleagues, urging them to support this important cause.
Thank you so much for your support.
